Broken feeds and missing posts

We have encountered some cases where Spotlight's embedded Instagram feed appears broken, either with missing styles, missing images or grey boxes in place of some images. In other cases, the feed has been missing entirely when embedded on a page.

There could be various reasons for this happening. The most likely ones are the following:

1. Issues with Spotlight's cached media

In order to test for this issue and resolve it, please do the following:

  1. Go to Instagram Feeds > Settings > Tools.
  2. Click on the Clear cache button.
  3. Go to Instagram > Feeds.
  4. Edit any existing feed or create a new one.

As soon as you do that, Spotlight will start to re-import the media from the selected accounts/hashtags. A small notification will show up in the top right-hand corner of the screen to notify you of the import. Do not navigate away from this page until the import is complete and the posts show up in the feed preview area.

If the issue persists and no posts appear after more than 30 seconds (the initial import could take that long in some cases), please try one of the other solutions below or contact support.

2. Caching plugin compatibility

  1. WP Rocket
  2. W3 Total Cache
  3. Autoptimize
  4. If you're using another optimization/caching plugin, please contact support.

3. Disabled Dashicons

At the moment, Spotlight requires the use of Dashicons for the embedded Instagram feed's style to function correctly. If Dashicons are disabled, the feed will appear broken as some styles will be missing.

Plugins such as Perfmatters typically have a toggle switch to disable Dashicons. Please keep such settings enabled when using Spotlight.

4. Theme incompatibility

In order to test for theme compatibility, please do the following (we strongly recommend doing this on a staging site, not your live website, as it may negatively impact your site when a theme is changed):

  1. Go to Appearance > Themes.
  2. Change the theme to a default one, such as Twenty Twenty.
  3. Go back to where the issue with Spotlight is present and check whether it still persists.
  4. If it does not persist, the issue is theme compatibility, so please contact support for further help and also contact your main theme's support team.
  5. If it does persist, please try one of the other solutions on this page or contact support.

5. Plugin incompatibility

In order to test for plugin compatibility, please do the following (we strongly recommend doing this on a staging site, not your live website, as it may negatively impact your site when plugins are deactivated):

  1. Go to your Plugins page.
  2. Deactivate all plugins except Spotlight Instagram Feeds.
  3. Go back to where the issue with Spotlight is present and check whether it still persists.
  4. If it does not persist, the issue is plugin compatibility, so please start activating one plugin at a time until the issue re-appears. Once you find the culprit, please contact support to let us know which plugin it is and also contact that 3rd-party plugin's support team.
  5. If it does persist, please try one of the other solutions on this page or contact support.

If you've tried the above and you still have trouble getting Spotlight to work correctly, please contact support and we'll help you figure it out.

6. Copyright infringement

In some rare cases, we have come across posts that include media (photos, videos, audio) that infringe on someone's copyrights. This happens when someone reports your post to Instagram for copyright infringements. In such cases, Instagram excludes these posts from their API so Spotlight will not be able to import them in any way.
